Hiking in Lachtal and surroundings

Veselý Svišť Chalet is a great starting point for various walks and hikes in the surrounding mountains due to its high position at 1,680 meters. The main Lachtal ridge is a comfortable walk which you can reach in half an hour and the closest peak Hoher Zinken (2,222 m) is easily accessible even with children. During the summer season, the main chairlift is also sometimes open during the week. Whoever walks along the ridge to the Steineck peak or to the prominent peak Großhansl (2,315 m), will enjoy wandering the deserted grassy mountains without roads like somewhere in the Carpathians. A beautiful alpine hike is the climb around the scenic Fischsee lake to the dominant peak of Hohenwart (2,363 m). From the top you can descend to the valley on the other side and enjoy a nice all-day hike. In the mountains around Lachtal there are many traditional mountain huts where you can taste various Styrian specialties.

Rope course, steam train, museums and thermal pools

Besides mountain tours, the Murtal region offers a host of attractions and trip destinations. Children will certainly appreciate the visit to the magnificent rope course in the historic town of Oberwölz, where there are 10 routes of varying difficulty, including those for the youngest. The total length of the ropes is nearly 3 km and there are plenty of funny "flying foxes". Next to the rope center you will find a nice outdoor swimming pool. Another interesting destination is the historic town of Murau, from where regular steam trains travel to Tamsweg in the summer. In addition, you can visit the Schwarzenberg Castle and the Murauer Brewery there. In inclimate weather, the thermal pools in the Aqua Therme Fohnsdorf, the historic tunnels of the Oberzeiring silver mine, the museum of old Alpine musical instruments, or the modern and fun-filled St. Ruprecht Wood Museum will be a pleasant diversion. More attractions can be found on the official region website.

Cycling trails

For cyclists, there are several very nice cycling trails nearby. In particular, we recommend the bike trail along the Mur River, which is largely flat and can be enjoyed even with children. In addition, a train runs along the narrow gauge trail through the Murtal valley, which takes you and your bikes back to the car. This cycle route, including a section in the territory of Slovenia and Croatia, measures a total of 457 km and a multi-day cycling trip can be done along it.

Paddle tours

Another option in the spring and summer is kayaking down the Mur River. In the Tamsweg sports section with a WW II-III level of difficulty you will enjoy true alpine wild water, under Predlitz, the Mur gradually calms down and there are several sections for a relaxing summer boat ride with children. The advantage is that there is plenty of water all year long, and you can use the practical narrow-gauge railway for the way back.

In our chalet, you can borrow a tourist map of the area and look through official leaflets of many nearby attractions. If you wish, we will be happy to advise you personally to make the most of your stay at our chalet.
